5 star review for ”Ghosts of Versailles” *****

The well praised release of John Corigliano’s ”Ghosts of Versailles” has been awarded with another great review! Opera Nederland gave the album a 5 out of 5 star rating. The review mentions that ”the opera is worth to finally be released on SACD”.

The album contains the original recordings of the premiere of the opera, in 1991 in the Met, New York. The opera is performed by the Los Angeles Opera and conducted by James Conlon. As the review states,

“The Ghosts of Versailles” captivates both the emotional, as well as the situations with witty satire and musical quotations. Corigliano regarded his opera as a mixture of opera buffa, Grand Opera, parody, show, theater and chamber music. He plays with styles, weaves quotes in his music and designs sound worlds for every situation.”

”The release appears in a nice cassette with a beautiful booklet that includes essays by the composer and librettist, biographies, a synopsis and complete libretto.”
