The Boston Symphony Orchestra had its inaugural concert in 1881 conducted by George Henschel. The orchestra was founded by Henry Lee Higginson, an American businessman and philantropist. For approximately twenty years, BSO has held its most performances in Symphony Hall, the old Boston Music Hall, one of the most revered concert halls. Under the direction of numerous great conductors namely Serge Koussevitzky, Charles Munch, Erich Leinsdorf, William Steinberg, Seiji Ozawa, James Levine, and Andris Nelsons, BSO, with 94 orchestra members, is known as one of the “Big Five” symphony orchestras in the United States.
BSO had its first accoustical recordins in 1917 with Karl Muck and recorded its first electrical album with Koussevitzky in the late 1920s. Subsequently, the orchestra has contributed several classical recordings include Sibelius’Second Symphony, Brahms’ German Requiem, Steonberg and Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique, Béla Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra, Mahler’s Sixth Symphony, Ravel’s complete Daphnis et Chloe, and many more.
