Pizzicato Supersonic review of John Holiday’s debut Over My Head

On his debut album, American countertenor John Holiday combines Spirituals and contemporary art songs, including world premiere recordings by Theo Morrison and Carlos Simon.

Pizzicato says Holiday “must undoubtedly be counted among the great countertenors of our time,” praising his agile voice, exceptional flexibility, and “a deeply sensitive and profoundly musical soul.” It highlights nuanced and intonation-secure control, creating “a very ethereal atmosphere” and an artistry “deeply moving” through the “sublimization” of sweet pain and unfulfilled longings.

The review also applauds “virtuosic, dramatic music,” noting coloratura and dazzling fiorituras described as “umwerfend,” alongside excellent spiritual arrangements and Gershwin’s “Summertime.” It concludes: “The accompaniment by Kevin Miller is outstanding,” rounding out “highly recommended” praise.
