“Polish tenor Piotr Beczala […] returns to the Royal Opera House in London next month as Rodolfo in Richard Jones’s staging of ‘La bohème’. He’ll also be celebrating the launch of his recording of verismo arias for Pentatone. It’s a welcome return to the fray for Beczala – pronounced ‘Bechawa’ – after the disappointment of a cancelled run of ‘Werther’ at the Met (one of the many operistic victims of coronavirus last month). The new recording, covering the cream of verismo in 18 arias, whets the appetite to discover how this civilised, wise and engaging singer will approach this ‘meatier’ repertoire which he has so far largely eschewed.”
