Annelien Van Wauwe, NDR Radiophilharmonie and Andrew Manze present Flow

We would like to announce that in addition to the already presented album of Mahler Symphony No.4 with Czech Philharmonic, Chen Reiss, and Semyon Bychkov, in April, PENTATONE releases Flow with Annelien van Wauwe, NDR Radiophilharmonie, and Andrew Manze.

Yoga-Inspired Programme for Basset Clarinet and Orchestra

On her second PENTATONE album FLOW, Annelien Van Wauwe presents a programme inspired by her love for yoga, combining Mozart’s famous Clarinet Concerto with the world premiere recording of Wim Henderickx’s concerto SUTRA. Van Wauwe performs both works on the characteristic basset clarinet, together with the renowned NDR Radiophilharmonie under the baton of Andrew Manze.

Annelien Van Wauwe is forging a reputation as one of the most exciting and original clarinetists of her generation. Her PENTATONE debut album Belle époque (2019) won an Opus Klassik Award in 2020. In his collaboration with the NDR Radiophilharmonie, conductor Andrew Manze brings his experience in the field of historically-informed performance to the polished symphonic sound of the orchestra, resulting in a prize-winning complete cycle of Mendelssohn symphonies (2017-2018), as well as highly-praised interpretations of Mozart’s, 38th and 39th, (2021) as well as 40th and 41st symphonies (2019) and Beethoven’s 5th and 7th symphonies (2020), all released on PENTATONE.

“My love of yoga, with its positive influence on my clarinet playing, led me to commission SUTRA, a concerto for basset clarinet, orchestra and electronics, from the Flemish composer Wim Henderickx, supported by BBC Radio 3 and the Borletti-Buitoni Trust. The piece is based on breath, yogic philosophy and meditation.

FLOW combines Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto K. 622, written in 1791, with Wim Henderickx’ basset clarinet concerto SUTRA, written in 2021. Even though Mozart composed his concerto 230 years before Henderickx completed his SUTRA concerto the effects on performers and listeners remain similar due to the concerti’s purity, simplicity, originality and perfect musical structures.

As a performer, I feel that both the practice of music and yoga can lead into a flow state. Hence the title of this PENTATONE album which includes two contrasting concerti for the basset clarinet.”
