We are delighted to share that the Singapore Symphony Orchestra’s album of works by John Williams, Bernard Herrmann and Hugo Friedhofer has received five stars and in Ritmo’s October issue. It is also included in the magazine’s ten recommended recordings for October.
In a review titled “Beyond the Big Screen,” critic Daniel Pérez Navarro counts Herrmann’s Clarinet Quintet among the peaks of the composer’s catalogue, offering about thirty minutes of “sheer pleasure.” He describes Williams’s Essay for Strings as dense and dark, indebted to Bartók. He also highlights Williams’s Flute Concerto, which seeks to reproduce the sound of the Japanese shakuhachi on the Western flute. Friedhofer’s rare Wind Quintet closes the album as an encore.
