RADIANCE AND ROMANCE: ARIAS FROM THE GOLDEN AGE

This captivating new release from PENTATONE celebrates the glittering world of 19th-century opera and the timeless beauty of the golden age of bel canto. Featuring music by Gaetano Donizetti, Gioacchino Rossini, Georges Bizet, Léo Delibes, and Giuseppe Verdi, the album showcases soprano Erin Morley and tenor Lawrence Brownlee—two of today’s most exciting voices—joined by the Münchner Rundfunkorchester under the baton of conductor Ivan Repušić. Together, they bring fresh brilliance to the French and Italian repertoire with performances that balance vocal agility, lyrical finesse, and emotional power.

This carefully curated collection of operatic gems highlights iconic duets and arias that continue to resonate with modern audiences through their passion, beauty, and dramatic flair. It marks an exciting PENTATONE debut for both Lawrence Brownlee and Ivan Repušić, while Erin Morley returns following her acclaimed performance in the label’s recording of Handel’s Alcina (2024). The Münchner Rundfunkorchester also makes a welcome return, having previously appeared on PENTATONE’s release of Gordon Getty’s Plump Jack (2012).

Released physically on standard CD.

REVIEWS:

The Rehearsal Studio:both Brownlee and Morley deliver thoroughly engaging tracks on this new album in both their solo and duet performances”

BBC Radio 3 – featured on Record Review: “There’s so much to like here including the solo arias around which the duets are woven… Total emotional engagement and obvious delight from both of them in the way their voices blend and soar together… Excellent support from the Munich Radio Orchestra and conductor Ivan Repusic”

RTBF – featured on “Ça vient de sorti” radio program: “The result is delicious, undeniably classy, disconcertingly easy, as the two singers overcome technically-difficult moments with insolent ease: we feel them covering each high note with a serene plasticity.”

Gramophone: “This is a wonderful album, impeccably and often thrillingly sung… Terrifically enjoyable, and very highly recommended indeed.”

Observer: “‘Revelatory’ must be the best descriptor for two French duets: “D’ou viens-tu?…C’est le Dieu de la jeunesse,” another slice of Lakmé, and “Ils verront si je mens!” from Bizet’s rarely performed La Jolie Fille de Perth. The latter aptly demonstrates, along with Brownlee’s Les Pêcheurs de Perles aria, that there is so much more to Bizet than Carmen.”
