Press release: Baarn, The Netherlands, 5 November 2015

PENTATONE, the classical music label specialising in high-end surround sound recordings, unveils its plans for the year 2016, including an American Opera series, Philips Classics in the REMASTERED CLASSICS series, new Artists of the Season and other highlights.

Highlights in the 2016 season will be the release of several new recordings by PENTATONE’s exclusive artists Arabella Steinbacher, Johannes Moser and Denis Kozhukhin. Arabella Steinbacher recorded a disc with Popular Pieces for Violin and Orchestra with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo and conductor Lawrence Foster. Johannes Moser will record, amongst others, the Elgar Cello Concerto opus 85, and Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations with the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, conducted by Andrew Manze. Denis Kozhukhin recently recorded Tchaikovsky and Grieg Piano Concertos with the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin under the direction of Vassily Sinaisky.

In 2016 the spotlights will also be on conductors, particularly on Marek Janowski, whose recording of Wagner’s complete Ring-cycle and a two-volume album of Wagner’s Orchestral Works containing Preludes and Overtures, will be released. Another conductor featured in 2016 will be the Colombian conductor Andrés Orozco-Estrada, who is going to appear on a large number of PENTATONE releases. He will be conducting Stravinsky’s Le Sacre du Printemps and The Firebird, Richard Strauss’ Ein Heldenleben and Macbeth and Dvořák’s Symphonies No. 6,7,8 and 9. Also conducting Dvořák will be Czech conductor Jakub Hrůša, who recorded an album with Overtures and an album with Rhapsodies of this composer. Other conductors will include Kazuki Yamada, Lawrence Foster and Andrew Manze, just to name a few.

In 2016 PENTATONE will launch a new series called the American Opera series, exclusively focused on American contemporary operas. The three operas to be released in 2016 are:

The Ghost of Versailles (1991), by John Corigliano. Commissioned by the Metropolitan Opera in New York, this opera received its premiere in December 1991, at the Metropolitan Opera and was revived there in the 1994-1995 season. PENTATONE releases The Ghost of Versailles in a recording of its February 2015 West Coast premiere at the Los Angeles Opera.

Cold Mountain, written by Pulitzer Prize-winning American composer Jennifer Higdon, in an August 2015 world premiere recording by The Santa Fe Opera, conducted by Miguel Harth-Bedoya.

The Canterville Ghost, by Gordon Getty, in a May 2015 world premiere performance by the Leipzig Opera under the baton of Matthias Foremny.

PENTATONE will continue its tradition of presenting an Artist of the Season half-yearly. From January to July 2016, young Russian pianist Denis Kozhukhin, who recently joined the PENTATONE roster, will be Artist of the Season. His PENTATONE debut recording of Tchaikovsky and Grieg piano concertos with the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin and conductor Vassily Sinaisky will be released in April next year. From July to December 2016, Kozhukhin will be followed by Andrés Orozco-Estrada, who is Chief conductor at the hr-Sinfonieorchester Frankfurt, Music Director of the Houston Symphony and Principal Guest Conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra. In 2016 PENTATONE will release no less than five recordings under the baton of Orozco-Estrada.

2016 brings a continuation of PENTATONE’s REMASTERED CLASSICS series. The series will be expanded with 10 re-releases of four-channel or quadraphonic Philips Classics recordings from the 1970s and 1980s. With the arrival of the multi-channel Super Audio CD, justice can finally be done to the original sound quality of these outstanding recordings. Among the albums to be re-released in the next year we find Kurt Masur conducting the Gewandhausorchester with Salvatore Accardo as soloist in Bruch and Beethoven, Sir Neville Marriner conducting the London Symphony Orchestra in Bizet’s Carmen and Arlésienne Suites and Sir Colin Davis conducting the Academy of St Martin in the Fields in Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas.
