Press release - PENTATONE’S OCTOBER RELEASES REACH FROM BACH TO STRAVINSKY

Press release: Baarn, The Netherlands, 6 October 2015

PENTATONE, the classical music label specialising in high-end surround sound recordings, adds four valuable recordings to its catalogue in October.

Schubert Lieder, orchestrated by Reger & Webern

The first of PENTATONE’s October releases is a recording of orchestrated Schubert Lieder. Many great composers, such as Franz Liszt, Johannes Brahms, Benjamin Britten, Hector Berlioz, Max Reger and Anton Webern made arrangements of Schubert’s songs. Surprisingly, these arrangements - made with such craftsmanship that they themselves became unparalleled works of art - are seldom heard either in concert or on record. This album combines 17 Schubert Lieder, of which 13 were orchestrated by late Romantic German composer Reger Max, and four by Second Viennese School member, Anton Webern. The songs are performed by tenor Christian Elsner together with the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin and conducted by Marek Janowski. This is a 1 bit DSD, 2,8 mhz recording, now available on SACD and in FLAC and DSD format.

PENTATONE OXINGALE series - J.S. Bach The Cello Suites
According to Anna Magdalena

“We must praise Anna Magdalena for her industry, perhaps her influence in ensuring the survival of these continually wondrous, challenging and transcendent works.” - Matt Haimovitz

The original manuscript of J.S. Bach’s 6 Suites for Cello Solo has been lost to history. One of the only manuscripts left is a copy made by Anna Magdalena, Bach’s second wife. Since 1890, when Casals found a published copy in a second-hand music shop and first performed the suites in public 20 years later, the suites have been both Bible and Holy Grail of the solo cello repertoire. Having recorded them once in the year 2000, Matt Haimovitz now returns to the Cello Suites with a stunning new interpretation, based on Anna Magdalena’s manuscript and performed on baroque cello and cello piccolo, the five-string instrument for which Bach’s Suite VI was likely intended. This 96 Khz, 24 bit PCM recording, available on SACD and in FLAC format, is the third release in the PENTATONE OXINGALE series.

REMASTERED CLASSICS Igor Stravinsky - Le Roi des Étoiles & Le Sacre du Printemps

“Michael Tilson Thomas's recordings were made in l972 in Boston's Symphony Hall. His Rite was highly praised when originally issued and remains one of the great performances of this masterpiece... This is one of the finest SACDs I've ever heard. Thank you PENTATONE!!” (Classical CD Review)

This month, two new flowers are added to the bouquet of the REMASTERED CLASSICS series. The first is a 1972 original four-channel recording of Igor Stravinsky’s Le Roi des Étoiles & Le Sacre du Printemps, performed by the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Men’s Chorus Of The New England Conservatory (Le Roi des Étoiles) under the baton of Michael Tilson Thomas, and now released by PENTATONE on SACD, fully remastered and in surround sound.

REMASTERED CLASSICS C.P.E. Bach - Sinfonias for Strings Wq 182 Nos. 1-6

The second “flower” is a performance of the Sinfonias for Strings Wq 182 Nos. 1-6 by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach on historical instruments. These six String Symphonies, commissioned in 1773 by Bach’s patron Gottfried van Swieten, perfectly represent the late 18th century Sturm und Drang movement in music. They are performed here by world renowned harpsichordist and conductor Trevor Pinnock and “his” (The) English Concert - the orchestra he founded in 1972 and led for the next thirty years - and with whom he pioneered performance on historical instruments. The original four-channel recording was made at the Henry Wood Hall in London in October 1979, remastered in 2015 and now released on SACD.
