AN IMMERSIVE GUITAR EXPLORATION OF DE HARTMANN’S MUSIC
Thomas de Hartmann: A Life in Music offers a unique and chronological journey through the life and work of the visionary composer, featuring 25 pieces arranged for guitar by Fabio Mittino and Bert Lams. Spanning de Hartmann’s early Romanticism, his deeply spiritual collaborations with G.I. Gurdjieff, and his later explorations of jazz and modernism, this collection captures the evolution of a life steeped in creativity and transformation.
Performed on vintage archtop guitars, these interpretations offer a warm, resonant sound rarely heard in classical recordings – intimate, expressive, and sonically distinctive. With over 15 years of collaboration, Mittino and Lams regularly perform together across the U.S. and Europe, bringing rare sensitivity and cohesion to this music. Their shared roots in Guitar Craft, the technique and philosophy developed by Robert Fripp, deeply inform their approach. Lams toured internationally with Fripp’s League of Crafty Guitarists and co-founded the acclaimed California Guitar Trio, while Mittino, also a member of the League and a former student of both Lams and Fripp, has devoted much of his career to two parallel paths: the rediscovery of Thomas de Hartmann’s compositions and his solo project Simple Music for Difficult People, featuring original guitar compositions that blend innovation, emotional depth, and elegance.
