Our Fabulous Product Coordinator Karolina Szymanik selects Spiritillo Mediterraneo with Cristina Prats Costa:
“Already from the moment we met Cristina online, I was very excited about this album, because one cannot remain indifferent to such a repertoire. It features a veritable constellation of some of the most outstanding composers of the 17th and 18th centuries, many of whom are very close to my heart. My eye and ear are particularly delighted by the extensive selection of works by Nicola Matteis, but also by Jean-Féry Rebel, Andrea Falconieri and, of course, Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber, whose music has become a staple of the Baroque violin repertoire in recent years. This comes as no surprise, as his works clearly stand out from those of many other composers active at the time. Added to this are Cristina’s arrangements of Spanish pieces, which bring a significant and very personal dimension to the album.
Cristina’s album is equally remarkable. Together with her fellow musicians, she takes us on a fascinating journey through Mediterranean landscapes that unfold before us from the very first notes to the very last. I have immense admiration for the thought that went into the order of the tracks. It is clear that it was not chosen at random but carefully conceived to draw the listener into this story, hold their attention for 74 minutes, and yet make them forget the passing of time.
Time, or rather the sense of it, just like the sense of rhythm and phrasing, is among the undeniable strengths of Spiritillo Mediterraneo – an album dripping with ornamentation and a rich musical palette.
I wholeheartedly recommend giving this album a listen, as it is undoubtedly an immersive journey on which spiritillo itself seems to guide us from beginning to end.”
