We are delighted to share that the Signum Quartett’s The Earth Trembled has been reviewed by Aart van der Wal for the Dutch site OpusKlassiek.
Van der Wal describes a quartet “known for its lively and strong interplay, expressiveness, and versatility,” in which differentiation and homogeneity go hand in hand. He writes that they play “with great technical mastery, but also with great feeling and attention to detail,” and that “the alternation between powerful drama and subtle lyricism also makes their performances a captivating experience.” He also welcomes the carefully constructed programme, in which Xandi van Dijk’s arrangements of folk songs and miniatures “fit well,” and says Kaprálová’s quartet is never reduced to “a footnote to Janáček.”
Released on 4 September, The Earth Trembled pairs Janáček’s two string quartets, “Kreutzer Sonata” and “Intimate Letters,” with Kaprálová’s String Quartet, Op. 8. It is the Signum Quartett’s fourth album for PENTATONE.
