Mark Adamo’s Lysistrata has been awarded five stars, the magazine’s top rating, by the Spanish magazine Ritmo, in a review by Pedro Coco.
The review highlights the timeless appeal of Aristophanes’ comedy and Adamo’s distinctive approach to the story, exploring the psychological motivations behind the famous strike. Blending echoes of Copland, Barber and Gershwin with Broadway musical and jazz influences, the composer creates a vibrant score that moves between classical and popular traditions.
The reviewer also praises Gil Rose’s inspired performance, bringing the central conflict to life through a nuanced and intelligent interpretation of the score, supported by a cohesive orchestra and a well-matched cast of singers.
Premiered twenty years ago, Adamo’s Lysistrata finally receives its recording debut on Pentatone, in collaboration with Boston’s Odyssey Opera, under the direction of Gil Rose.
