Clarinettist Annelien Van Wauwe debuts on the label

One of the most exciting and original clarinettists of her generation.”

BBC Music Magazine

PENTATONE is delighted to announce that Belgian clarinettist Annelien Van Wauwe revives the golden glow of a bygone age on her PENTATONE debut album Belle époque, together with the  Orchestre National de Lille and its music director Alexandre Bloch.

Quote from Annelien Van Wauwe

“Feeling enthusiastic about now being a member of the Pentatone artist’s family would be an understatement. Recording albums for a label that mirrors all aspects of my artistic personality is like having found a second voice to express the music that I care for so deeply. Both Pentatone and myself aim for outstanding quality and honest interpretations to experience the intensive emotions of music. I feel thrilled that I will be sharing these with our listeners soon. Working with Renaud Loranger and his highly qualified and charismatic team has been and will be a most inspiring experience. I am looking forward to the release of the first solo album ‘belle époque’ and future cooperations.”

Quote from Renaud Loranger, Vice President Artists and Repertoire, PENTATONE

“I have been following Annelien’s career with growing interest over the last couple of years, and I am thrilled that she is joining the label. She has that exceptional combination of artistry, musicianship and virtuosity, fuelled by a relentlessly curious mind and voracious appetite for repertoire and the realm of possibilities the instrument offers. We look forward to extraordinary developments.”

The programme is built around treasures of French turn-of-the-century music such as Debussy’s Première Rhapsodie, Pierné’s Canzonetta and Widor’s Introduction et Rondo (the latter two in arrangements by Jelle Tassyns). Belle époque also offers works that display a spiritual kinship to the age, such as Brahms’s first clarinet sonata, arranged by Luciano Berio, and a world-premiere recording of Paris-based contemporary composer Manfred Trojahn (Rhapsodie pour clarinette et orchestre). Annelien van Wauwe is a former BBC New Generation Artist and winner of the ARD International Music Competition 2012 and the renowned Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award 2018. She kickstarts an exclusive collaboration with PENTATONE with this first solo album. The Orchestre National de Lille and Alexandre Bloch release their second PENTATONE album, after their 2018 recording of Bizet’s Les Pêcheurs de perles, crowned with a Diapason d’or. This album will be released as 1 Super Audio-CD and in digital formats for streaming and high-resolution downloads. (Article number: PTC 5186808)
