Classical Voice: Avdeeva “Makes the Case for Late Liszt”

We are delighted to share that Yulianna Avdeeva’s Metanoia has been reviewed by Collin Ziegler for San Francisco Classical Voice, in a piece titled “Yulianna Avdeeva Makes the Case for Late Liszt.”

Ziegler praises her “unflagging restraint” and her attention to every note. He describes a quiet precision that is “neither sentimental nor austere,” bringing out the otherworldliness of Liszt’s last pieces with “intimidating clarity.” He singles out the Andante sostenuto of the Sonata as a highlight, “singing, entrancingly paced, and softly hued.” He concludes that Metanoia is “interesting enough on its own terms,” offering a perplexing body of music in “Avdeeva’s sensitive, thoughtful performance.”

Metanoia was released on 28 August and pairs Liszt’s Sonata in B minor with a selection of his late works.
