We are delighted to share that Yulianna Avdeeva spoke to Gino Thanner for BR Klassik about Metanoia, in a feature titled “Liszt without show effect.”
Avdeeva explains that “Metanoia” means transformation, and that Liszt underwent one as a person and as an artist, from celebrated virtuoso to a composer whose late pieces open a window to the 20th century. She describes how playing these works changed her own approach: finding different shades of grey in music marked piano or pianissimo, and expanding the dynamic range. “The fewer notes there are, the harder it is to really fill them,” she says.
