Rafael Payare & OSM present Berlioz’s masterworks

The Orchestre symphonique de Montréal and Music Director Rafael Payare present a vivid new recording of Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique and Le carnaval romain, works that showcase the composer’s flair for drama, colour, and psychological intensity. Featuring OSM’s newly acquired carillon bells, this release captures Berlioz at his most imaginative.

“After three albums dedicated to late Romanticism and the great German composers, I am delighted to dive back into the French repertoire, where the OSM has distinguished itself for decades. In the orchestra’s repertoire since 1937, the Symphonie fantastique beautifully embodies the deep connection the Orchestra maintains with French music. Beyond its narrative elements, it is the striking orchestral colors that left the strongest impression on me. Thanks to the virtuosity of the Orchestra’s musicians, we were able to offer a fresh interpretation: renewed yet faithful to tradition, and enriched by the exceptional acoustics of the Maison symphonique.

We’re also thrilled to be enriching our orchestra with these magnificent carillon bells. The musicians and I are delighted to be able to expand our sound palette and bring a new sparkle to many works from the great repertoire – the result is quite simply remarkable. We now have the opportunity to perform, in all their richness and authenticity, works by Berlioz, Mahler, Shostakovich, Strauss, Mussorgsky, with the complete set of instruments imagined by their composers.”

“We are delighted to collaborate once again with our dear partners, the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal – conducted by the incomparable Rafael Payare – in this new release, a sumptuous and thrilling program devoted to Berlioz. The OSM has already enriched the PENTATONE catalogue with varied and exciting programs that feature Mahler, Schoenberg and Richard Strauss. This new release, both thoughtful and exhilarating, highlights different facets of this remarkable orchestra and its Music Director. We’re proud to collaborate with this invaluable institution, which rightfully garners praise and accolades for its work on the concert stage and in the recording studio.”
